Friction

The disconnect was never just a marketing symptom — it was structural. A continent asserting genuine economic and technological sovereignty had, at its financial centre, an institution that sounded borrowed rather than built. And the dissonance cut both ways: employees were asked daily to embody a pan-African conviction that the group’s own internal communications had never once given them the words to express.

02

Focus

A brand can never project outward what it does not fully live inward. That single realisation reframed the entire brief. Convincing any market first required convincing the organisation itself — and that conviction could never be installed top-down. It had to be recognised as something the group already carried, then given the architecture to travel consistently through every layer of the business.

03

Shift

Anchored around one positioning — “Financing the continent, from the continent” — we rebuilt the institution from the inside out, across five deliberately sequenced moves. The executive committee was aligned through co-construction workshops rather than directives, so the new conviction felt like recognition, not instruction. Onboarding was rebuilt so every recruit understands their contribution to continental sovereignty before hearing a single product pitch. A volunteer network of cultural ambassadors carried the story into branches and team meetings, ensuring the transformation played out in corridors as much as in campaigns. The institutional tone was rewritten from internal channels first — intranet, town halls, management briefings — so employees held the right words before a single client did. An editorial platform followed last, spotlighting the entrepreneurs the group finances every day.

04

Impact

The group stopped borrowing the vocabulary of international finance and started building its own. By closing the gap between internal reality and external ambition, it crossed a threshold most institutions never reach — the point where a brand’s authority comes from its own people believing it first, not from a media budget repeating it loudly enough.
